Class Project: Work Committees
The following projects will help Assi workers in their campaign
for justice. In addition, they provide ways for UCLA students
to re-direct campus resources for needs in immigrant communities,
while providing opportunities for students to learn from immigrant
workers (about creating interethnic alliances, transforming gender
relations in our communities, and expanding democracy), to develop
new leadership skills, and to educate and mobilize fellow students
in support of Assi workers. All of these projects will be finished
this quarter.
1) Creation of trilingual children’s book on Assi Market
Workers Campaign
- Students will create text and drawings
- Students will make at least one hundred copies for distribution
by KIWA to workers and their families
- Students will write the book in three languages: Spanish,
Korean, and English
2) Organization of a one-day UCLA student solidarity picketline
and rally at Assi Market
- Students will work with KIWA staff to organize this picketline
and small rally — suggested date, Friday, March 5, late
afternoon
- Students will serve as monitors and speakers at this event
- Students will mobilize fellow UCLA students for this picketline
and recruit solidarity speakers from campus groups
- Students will develop a back-up plan in case of heavy rain
3) Organization of small campus forum to raise awareness of
UCLA students about the importance of the Assi Market Workers
Campaign for Justice
- Students will organize a campus forum for about 40 to 60
students and serve as the main speakers at this forum
- Students will handle all aspects of planning for this forum
— e.g., publicity, content of program, mobilization,
educational materials, etc.
4) Collection of UCLA student group endorsements for Assi workers
campaign
- Students will be responsible for contacting and getting
re-endorsements for the campaign from the approximately twenty
UCLA student groups that endorsed the campaign two years ago
— see the following websites for list of UCLA endorsers:
http://www.boycottassi.com/
and http://www.marketworkerscampaign.com/
- Students will be responsible for getting endorsements from
at least five more UCLA student groups
- Students will develop a simple brochure about the campaign
and reasons why UCLA students should support it
- Students will develop other creative educational materials
and activities based on the ideas and suggestions of Tony
Osumi and Alison Delacruz
5) Coordinating committee of three-to-five students
- Students will serve as liaisons from our class to KIWA
and the Assi workers
- Students will facilitate communication among work committees
and sharing of resources developed by each committee
- Students will obtain funding from USAC to support projects
of each committee
