Homework Assignment 3

This assignment is due by January 31.

For this assignment, each student is required to work with at least one other student in our class and together to write up two to three pages answering the following three questions.

1. Make an analysis of the current state of consciousness of your fellow UCLA students (outside this class); focus on how their level of awareness about and interest in issues related to peace and justice that we have covered so far in our class. For example, how much awareness and interest are there among your UCLA students about the impending war against Iraq? How much awareness is there about the relationship of the impending war to related issues we have heard in class, such as attacks on immigrant rights, the erosion of civil rights, the corporate, economic motives underlying U.S. military intervention across the globe, the deepening cutbacks in health care and education, growing poverty in the world and its impact on children, the need to address issues of spirituality in political organizing, and the limitations of U.S. media coverage of these issues? (Note: In your answer if you find yourself emphasizing “student apathy,” read and then respond to the section on “Organizing” in the “Student Activist Resource Handbook” at the back of our Class Reader.)

2. Make an analysis of what is now being done on campus to raise awareness and mobilize students around issues of peace and justice. In your opinion, what are some of the most effective efforts? Why? In your opinion, what still needs to be done? Be specific. Why?

3. Based on your answers to questions 1 and 2, what type of project or projects do you propose for our class for the remaining weeks of this quarter? Describe your ideas for a project or projects in enough detail so that others can understand them.
