Educational Outreach Assignment

This assignment is due by March 14.

This assignment is worth 10% of your grade for this course and is due by Friday, March 14 (our last class session).

This assignment has three purposes: 1) to provide at least two opportunities for each student to practice doing educational outreach around issues of peace and justice — first to a group of people that they already have ties with and second to a group of students slightly outside of each student’s existing comfort zone; 2) to enable each student to practice new techniques for raising educational awareness other than simply “talking at” people”; and 3) to provide opportunities for each student to work in teams with other students from our class (note: you have not finished this assignment if you did it alone).

Based on completing your two educational outreach assignments, write at least 500 words answering the questions below.

1. To which groups of students did you outreach? Was it easier or harder to do an educational presentation to the group within your comfort zone than the group outside your comfort zone? Why? Before making each presentation, did you and other teammates have stereotypes of the groups you were presenting to? If so, how did you deal with these stereotypes?

2. How did you present issues related to peace and justice? Did you and your teammates only “talk to” students, or did you try some of the approaches we’ve discussed in class and covered in our Class Reader? How effective was your presentation?

3. With whom from our class did you work to make your two presentations? In each presentation, what role did you take? For example, for the presentation within your comfort zone, did you help other teammates who were moving outside their comfort zone?
