| By Sang Ho Lee Campus Resources: URL Periodical Section I picked the University Research Library periodical section to check out its unique features and its potential usefulness. The periodical section subscribes to numerous types of magazines, many of which I am not familiar with. The periodical section covers subjects that range from African languages to urban planning. To find the location of a particular magazine or journal, you must use an ORION terminal and search for it by typing "ljt" followed by the title. The periodical section contains two major sections. In the newspaper section, one can find over 50 titles, including the likes of "Atlanta Constitution," the "Boston Globe" and the "Chicago Tribune." There are many foreign newspapers as well, including the "Philippine News" and "Moscow News." The newspapers are arranged in alphabetical order, unlike the magazines. The newspaper stacks carry papers published in cities starting from Abidjan to Zurich. Thus, I was somewhat disappointed about the lack of Asian newspaper titles, specifically those of Chinese and Korean origin. I found one publication titled "The People's Korea," published every two weeks by the Choson Sinbo Company. Ironically, the paper has its headquarters in Tokyo. As extensive as the newspaper is, the magazine section is much more extensive. Despite the numerous magazines on hand, I was unable to recognize more than a handful of titles. All of the famous titles are located behind the front desk, which included publications such as the "New Yorker," "Newsweek" and "Vanity Fair." The majority of the magazines, however, appeared completely foreign. It was obvious that this library's periodical section supplies materials that are geared more towards research and not leisure. There were about sixty to seventy titles that covered the subject of education alone. Examples include the "Journal of Education Policy" and "Gender and Education." Many foreign periodicals were present, many from Europe and the Middle Eastern countries. One publication that caught my eye possessed this title: "Journal of Gambling Studies." It discusses the problem of gambling and discusses various gambling behaviors. Overall, the periodical section in the URL could prove to be really useful for writers in our class if the project requires research. I would be surprised if one could not find a magazine in here to fulfill their research requirements. I have found a campus resource that I'll be sure to utilize in the near future.
