| By Christie Lafranchi "Hues": A Magazine for All Women Choosing a publication from the list to write about was easy form me. When I saw the title, "Hues" magazine, I had a flashback to last year when I saw an issue of it while buying textbooks at Sisterhood Bookstore. It looked like an interesting magazine, a nice break from the usual magazines such as "Glamour" or "Cosmopolitan" that are targeted towards younger women. I had never seen a women's magazine that approached the issues in its articles from a truly multicultural and multiracial point of view. Finding the magazine was easy, I just went back to Sisterhood, bought it and started reading. "Hues" is targeted towards young women of any and all races and ethnicities. In the letter from the editors, "Hues" states, "Our obligation is to hook you up with the best resources for making it on your own." It's published twice a year, or maybe four times a year (it wasn't clear) and has been operating for two years. It covers everything, health, politics, female empowerment, some fashion and practical, need to know issues such as how to find an apartment, to name just a few. There were many things that distinguish "Hues" from a mainstream publication. I didn't see one diet-obsessed, excessively skinny girl any make up tips and not one article about how to get or keep a boyfriend. One thing in particular that caught my eye was the swimsuit section. As this issue is for summer 1997, they included a bathing suit layout. What was remarkable about this section were the models. They were all different sizes, shapes and ethnicities. Most of them were not size sixes and one of them was actually rather large. I thought these models were great! They all looked really comfortable, happy and healthy. It was nice to see models that didn't make me feel hugely inadequate and want to jump into a diet. (Christie Lafranchi is a junior majoring in Anthropology.) |
