UCLA Tour for Wilton Place Elementary School Children

On Friday, September 16, five classes from Wilton Place Elementary School toured UCLA. The tour was led and organized by students from our UCLA class (Asian American Studies 197J) and graduate students from a class taught by Wilton Place teacher Tony Osumi for Center X of the UCLA Graduate School of Education Credential program.

The Wilton Place classes were those taught by Tony Osumi, Joanne Lee, Glen Kitayama, Jung-eun Son, and Sheila Hubbard.

Activity Descriptions

"Pass the Ball"

Have the entire class stand in a circle. Using a ball, have them pass it to each other overhead until the ball has made one full rotation (i.e. each student has made contact with the ball). Do the same thing again, but have the students pass the ball between their legs. Finally, do it a third time an dhave them pass it to the right side.

Do this full activity more than once, timing each time the students complete the entire process. Encourage them to improve thier time as you repeat the exercise. The timer should be in the middle of the circle, with other UCLA students intermixed into the entire circle.

Remember, before you begin, to explain what you will be doing and demonstrate it for the kids.

"Index Card Art"

Give each student an index card and then have them draw an image depicting teamwork, unity, or family. Make sure the cards have two holes on top. Remind the kids to place the holes on the index card together. This chain will be used during the end-or-the-term reception to be held at Wilton Place School
