Opening
"Youth,
Power, Change" is a theme that underscores the legacy we shape
at the University of California, Los Angeles. The goals of the conference
consist of commemorating the 30 years of Chicana and Chicano student
activism at UCLA and historically documenting the experiences of
a handful of individuals in an enormous movement. This project becomes
a stepping stone for future generations to carry the momentum that
has been built since the 1960’s.
Today we
celebrate the individual voices of many generations that have spoken
for our Raza. Our conference of today is a humble attempt to contribute
historical records of the Chicana and Chicano Student Movement at
UCLA. We dedicate this conference to all that sacrificed and dedicated
time and energy to our movement. Especially we dedicate our conference
to those that have dedicated a lifetime to change at UCLA.
We celebrate
the power of ideals that fuel students and ideals that lead to change.
What has been accomplished? Where have we not progressed? Where
do we want to go? Simple questions, that we need to contemplate
and evaluate, first in ourselves, then in larger contexts. We dare
examine the beginnings that allow us to see our place, and shape
the position of the future.
Thank You
for your attendance,
