LOS ANGELES TIMES Wednesday, October 23, 1968 Pickets Urge Teachers to Remain at Lincoln
By Jack McCurdy Times Education Writer
About 50 pickets demonstrated in front of Lincoln High School Tuesday, urging 40 teachers to withdraw request for transfers they filed after teachers Sal Castro was returned to the school by the Board of Education.
About half the demonstrators were Mexican-American and others were Angle, some from the West side area, school officials said. The picketing lasted for about 1 ½ hours.
Participants said their actions also represented a vote of confidence to students, teachers and administrators at the school who are working for better education through democratic processes.
The demonstration, they said, was designed to show the public that the school board was mistaken in allegedly believing that the "militants" who supported Castro represented the majority of residents.
Castro was relieved of his teaching duties after being indicted by the County Grand Jury for allegedly helping plan the walkout of Mexican-American students on the East Side last March. The board later reinstated him after protests by Mexican-Americans.
Meanwhile, the Educational Issues Coordinating Committee, which pressed for Castro's return and spearheaded demands for changes in East Side schools, strongly urged the 40 teachers no to transfer away from Lincoln.
The entire faculty and administration at Lincoln should work in harmony toward improving the educational program, said the Rev. Vahac Mardirosian, committee chairman.
