UCLA DAILY BRUIN Wednesday, May 22, 1968 Editorial
Concerning the charges UMAS has brought against Phi Kappa Psi; there has been a flagrant misrepresentation of the facts, an over-sensitivity on the issues and an attempt to ramrod a violation of this organization's constitutional rights through the University's administrative channels.
The picture on the front page of the Daily Bruin cannot be denied; it is "proof" of outright "white racism." However, what is not shown in the picture is the bottom of the sign which stated, "IGNORE THE ABOVE, COME ON IN AND HAVE A GOOD TIME."
Apparently enough people "ignored the above" and went on in and had a good time. I am not a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity; Eddy Anderson, black candidate for president is not a member of Phi Kappa Psi and neither Tony Walters, a black student and ex-yell leader, yet none of us had any trouble entering the party, nor were any of us asked to leave. Mr. Anderson, Tony Walters and their dates were dancing and seemed to have a good time. No one was asked to leave because of race, religion or creed, nor was anyone denied admission. Consequently, The UMAS charge of "…flagrant expression of prejudice…" is totally unfounded.
If I go to Meyerhoff Park and burn a replica of an American flag or paint a "finger" over the star field I will be arrested? No, I won't e arrested; that flag is my property and I can do whatever I want with it. Phi Kappa Psi cannot be penalized for misrepresenting the Mexican flag unless all those students who burned and mutilated replicas of the American flag during draft protest and likewise penalized.
The members of UMAS have seized upon an "incident" which at first glance would require sever action; however, at second glance it is obvious that what appears is not, and that 20 students drafted a letter demanding action on an incident which they themselves created out of circumstantial evidence.
Furthermore, these students took this letter to various administrators and student officers who echoed UMAS demands for discipline prior to investigation. Consequently, I charge Vice Chancellors Charles E. Young and Rosemary Park, GSA President Harry Whitaker and ASUCLA President Joe Rubistein with a failure to ascertain all the facts and condemn them for recommending disciplinary action after hearing one side of a "serious incident."
