Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Enrollment priority to Chicana and Chicano studies majors. This is a Humanities-based introduction to three central issues in Chicana/o life and culture: Identity, Gender, and Representation. The course will examine central concepts and historical experiences which define Chicano culture, from exploring indigenous roots to discussing current issues in Chicana/Chicano identity: labels, colonized mind, sexism, homophobia, stereotyping, and alienation. The course will also look briefly at the Chicano Movement and the cultural production that emerged from it in literature and the visual arts. Emphasis on diversity of the Chicano experience, gender as a central cultural variable, and the role of writing to the ongoing revolution of Chicana/o empowerment. *
