Sociology M174 - Summer Session 2000: Syllabus 6 week lecture and discussion course on the Sociology of the Family Tuesday and Thursday Hershey 1609 3.15 pm - 5.20 pm . Essential Reading is the course textbook: The Sociology of Marriage and the Family by Randall Collins and Scott Coltrane. This can be purchased at the ASUCLA store. The family is a universal social institution. It is found in every society no matter how large scale, or small scale and over the course of human history many changes have occurred in the structure of family life and in the form of family relationships. This course begins with a historical and anthropological overview of the family, followed by a review of the consequences of the industrialization for patterns of marriage and family life. The remainder of the course will be concerned with the American family in contemporary times. There are ten teaching sessions in this summer school course and in each one, students will complete an in class writing assignment based on the appropriate readings. This will be followed by the lecture and discussion. Though these in class papers will not be graded, there will be a one percent penalty on the grade for any missed writing assignment. To get the most out of this course, it is important to cover the required reading before each lecture. The first writing assignment will cover Part One of the Textbook : Comparative and Historical Perspectives. Session Six : August 24th 2000 Mid term Examination ( Covering lectures 1-5 and chapters 1- 7.) Session Seven : August 29th 2000 Procreation and the Family Reading & Writing: Chapter 10 Session Eight August 31st 2000 Gender and Power in Marriage and Family Life. Reading & Writing: Chapter 11 Session Nine September 5th 2000 Motherhood, Fatherhood and Childhood: Stability and Change Reading & Writing : Chapter 12 Session Ten : September 7th 2000 Conflict and Dissolution in Marriage and Family Life Reading & Writing : Chapters 13 and 14 Session Eleven: September 12th 2000 Review: The Future of Marriage and Family Life Reading & Writing : Chapter 16 Session Twelve: September 14th 2000 Final Examination. Assessment: The course grade will be a simple average of the two examinations minus any penalties deducted for missing in-class assignments.
