Purpose of the Course:

Sociology 145 focuses on how some behaviors in society come to be seen as strange, unusual, objectionable--that is to say deviant--and subject to social sanction. This course will consider both the institutional and interactional aspects of the construction of deviant behavior. It will examine the leading sociological approaches to the study of deviance, deviance and the law, the consequences of being defined a deviant and the organization of deviant behavior in society.

Be prepared for fast-paced class meetings as this course is being taught in a six-week summer session. You must keep up with your reading assignments. We may not discuss every reading assignment in class, therefore, be prepared to answer questions on the examinations over material that has not been discussed in class. If you have any questions on a reading assignment, please visit me during my office hours.

Required Course Reader and Books (also on reserve):

Pontell, Henry N., ed. 1999. Social Deviance: Readings in Theory and Research. 3d ed. Upper Saddle River, New Jersey: Prentice Hall. (P)

Goffman, Erving. [1963] 1986. Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity. New York: Simon & Schuster. (G)

Course Requirements:

(1) Examinations: There will be a mid-term examination and a final examination. Each examination is worth 100 points. Examination questions may be drawn from lectures, textbook readings, course reader, classroom presentations, guest speakers and presentations, videos, films, audio tapes, handouts, and any other materials covered up to the scheduled examination date.

Examination formats may include objective (true/false, multiple/choice, etc.), true/false explain, short and long essay questions. The specific format for an examination will be discussed before the examination date.

July 20, 2000: Mid-term examination
August 3, 2000: Final Examination

No make-up mid-term examination or final examination will be given except under extraordinary circumstances. The student must provide written official documentation of the extraordinary circumstance and must seek permission in advance of the scheduled examination date. Any student missing a scheduled examination without prior permission will receive a grade of F for that examination.

(2) Paper: A three-page typed paper is required. Please staple your paper and do not use plastic or cardboard folders or binders. Guidelines will be distributed in class.

July 27, 2000: Due at class time

Penalty for Late Paper: 10 points off for each day late beginning at class time.

All late assignments must be turned into the Sociology Department Office, 2201 Hershey Hall. Please ask the office assistant to note the date and time on your paper, and sign it.

No date + no time + no office assistant signature = F

(3) Attendance:

Regular class attendance is expected. Students who do not attend class regularly will be at a severe disadvantage on the examinations since materials covered in lecture as well as from the texts and readings will be on the examinations.

(4) Preparation for class: Students are expected to read the assignment prior to class meetings and be prepared for class discussions.

Please check the Course Webpage throughout the quarter. I will regularly post announcements and answers to student's questions regarding the course on the website.

Website address: http://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/001/soc145-1/

Some reading assignments may be added or deleted during the quarter.

(5) No audio recording of the lectures is permitted.

(6) If you have a question about any grade you receive, you may submit a written request for a review of the grade no later than one week after the examination or assignment is handed back to the class. Your written request for review must point out a specific error or oversight in the grading process. The examination or assignment will be regraded with the possibility that you may receive a lower grade as well as the possibility of a higher grade.
